Tips for Evaporative (Swamp) Coolers

Nor Cal summers can be crazy hot. We see temperatures well over 120 degrees and you can definitely see this when it comes time to pay your electric bill. To reduce costs many people choose to utilize an Evap (evaporative or swamp) Cooler. Evap Coolers can be tricky but here are a few tips to help you get the most from your Evap Cooler.

1. ICE

- Adding ice to the water reservoir is the easiest way to get cooler air from your Evap. Many people like to use block ice because it melts slower thus lowering the temperature of the water longer meaning more cool air for your home.

2. Evap + Air Conditioning = Bad Idea

- Many people believe that running an Evap and an Air Conditioner will help cooler their home better. However this is not the case. Evap cooler produce cool wet air and require the windows of your home to be slightly open. Air Conditioners do just the opposite. The produce cool dry and and work best in an air tight environment. Running both at the same will cause them to work against each other and cause them to work harder which will cost you more money (Yikes!)

3. Maintenance Twice a Year

- If you want your cooler to do it's absolute best then nothing can replace great yearly maintenance. Have your Evap Cooler serviced at the beginning of the summer as well as in the middle of the season to make sure it is in tip-top shape.
